Meet the Team

Our mission is to share the spirit of challenge and adventure inherent in the sport of climbing with every individual and in every community within our reach.

Our vision is to:
- Be a catalyst for the advancement of climbing both regionally and nationally
- Provide training and instruction for all climbing disciplines
- Promote responsible climbers indoors and outdoors
- Recognize the talents of our staff by supporting their professional training and development
- Embrace our differences and support the communities that we live in

  • Sharon started climbing in 2019, and a couple years later left a full-time job ER Nursing to pursue her passion for climbing, the climbing community, and the outdoors. She started in Newburyport with Outdoor Camp and MCS, then assistant manager before accepting the GM role at the Newburyport location in 2021 and the Everett location in 2022. Whether she is working inside the gym or outside instructing, Sharon is always psyched to watch people experience the joy of climbing, try hard, and discover they are capable of more than they think.
Though climbing is her number one passion, she is also an ultrarunner and has completed six 100-milers so far; she is also a backcountry skier, a backpacker, a surfer, occasionally bikes, and loves to read.

  • Derek has been involved with rock climbing for over two decades and holds a degree in Outdoor Education with a concentration in Wilderness Leadership. He has coached with MetroRock since 2020, beginning with the Adult Team and later coaching our Youth Performance and Training Teams. Derek's climbing interests include indoor and outdoor bouldering and strength training. When he's not climbing or training for climbing, Derek enjoys running as many miles as he can, training for and racing in ultra marathons. He continues to run Adult Programming, including the Adult Team, and is always around the gym. If you see Derek, say hi! Fun fact, Derek is also a licensed attorney!!

  • Matt first started climbing in 2018 and quickly fell in love with the sport. While studying Engineering at Dartmouth College, Matt spent his school years volunteering as a leader in the Dartmouth Mountaineering Club, guiding sport and ice climbing trips for fellow students, and his summer months teaching rock climbing at YMCA Camp Takodah.
Matt joined our team after graduating in 2023 and loves sharing his passion for climbing with the next generation. When he’s not climbing, you can find him playing chess or wandering through the woods in search of adventure.

If you’re passionate about climbing and are interested in joining our team, you can learn more about positions and fill out an application on our careers page.

  • Mike Veazey began climbing decades ago in Maine and has since traveled and climbed obsessively and extensively all over North America. In addition to being head routesetter in Newburyport, he is also in charge of outdoor staff training, and helps to run all of MetroRock's climbing competitions. To date, he has been a key part of setting/organizing/running more than 100 competitions at MetroRock and other venues. He has high-angle rescue training, is an AMGA certified climbing instructor and a USAC Certified routesetter. His climbing achievements include Fat Lady (5.13c) and First Ascent of Jack-in-the-box (5.12a R).
Veazey is a father of two, explorer, route developer, and adventurer who loves to share his passion of climbing (both indoors and out) with everyone.

  • Jamie is a full-time teacher who started climbing in 2021. She trains with the Adult Team in Newburyport, is a regular at the Dark Horse Bouldering Series, and coaches youth programming as well. When she’s not bouldering, she enjoys cycling, hiking, and board games. Her dream trip would be to cycle through the Columbia River Gorge in the fall.

  • Danny has been a member of the Team Metrorock and the Metrorock Family since he was a wee little thing. As he’s progressed in his own climbing, attending several Youth National Championships, he’s discovered a passion for coaching. We are psyched to have him join our coaching staff after graduating high school.
